The movie is called Snakes on A Plane? So what is it about?

It is no surprise that one of the biggest summer movie hits was “Snakes on A Plane.” With a name like that, how could you go wrong? This movie primarily gave audiences a chance to see another side of Samuel L. Jackson. I was lucky enough to see “Snakes on a Plane” opening night and boy was it crazy. Every time Jackson spoke audience members went nuts.

Appeal for the movie had been forming gradually over time. More than a year before the movie was released, online web bloggers made online cults surrounding the mystery movie. An interesting point: because of the movie’s considerable Internet fan base, New Line Cinema incorporated feedback and suggestions from online users into its production. Due to all this hype, “Snakes on A Plane” had a successful box office, generating around $25 million.

The humor in the movie is derived from the completely ridiculous situation. On board a flight over the Pacific Ocean, an assassin, bent on killing a passenger who is a witness in protective custody, lets loose a crate full of deadly snakes. The point was not to make an amazing horror movie, but to poke fun at the absurd scenarios that often happen in these types of thrillers. It is the kind of film that draws people into unrealistic realms. At the end of the movie a passenger is needed to fly the plane, a cliché that happens in many plane horror movies. However, in Snakes on A Plane, our fill-in pilot turns out to be Keenan, a familiar name to all those who grew up watching the popular television show “All That”. However, we find out that his only flying experience is playing a video game on his portable Playstation.

The movie was like nothing I had ever seen, which was definitely Jackson’s intention. Samuel L. Jackson signed up for this film after only reading the title. Then later on when he heard that the film title was going to be changed, he threatened to leave the production of the film. Jackson refused to let the movie have a serious title, such as Pacific Air Flight 121, the initial title idea.

There is no low point in the movie and the action is constant. While watching the movie, I was laughing, trying to look away, or screaming in shock. Once on DVD, I am sure it would be more than sufficient for entertainment during a movie night with friends. This movie however, is not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for those who are afraid of flying.

Basically, the film rocks. I entered the theatre knowing little about Sammy J. and, along with everyone else, exited saying “Samuel Jackson is the man!”
