Letters to the editor: Fairfield U: Falling from reach school to safety

To the Editor: As parents of a graduate of the class of 2000, who is currently an MBA candidate at Fairfield, and of a student in the class of 2006, we were dismayed when we learned that Fairfield's acceptance rate this year was close to 75 percent. Our fear is that Fairfield's reputation is going to be diminished and that high school seniors will look at Fairfield as a safety instead of a target or reach school.

Letter to the editor: The value of open discourse

To the Editor: For any institution, even a university, it's tempting to find ways to make challenging or controversial voices disappear. As a university in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition, it is not surprising that an event involving gay and lesbian relationships should be disquieting.

Letter to the editor: The goal of a Catholic university

This statement was made by Dr. Lakeland at the forum replacing the same-sex marriage forum on April 14, 2005. I think it is very unfortunate for many individuals that tonight's scheduled event was first cancelled, and that later it was impossible to restore it to the calendar, at least for now.

Letter to the editor: Protecting the rights of student organizations

To the Editor: I would like to congratulate all the students, faculty and concerned community members who came to the Oak Room last Thursday to protest President von Arx's cancellation of the Alliance sponsored forum on Marriage Equality. I was especially impressed by the sincerity and eloquence of the many students who spoke.

Letter to the editor: English faculty protests

To the Editor: As faculty members committed to the robust exchange of ideas, we protest President von Arx's decision to cancel the Marriage Equality Forum. Like most of the 250 faculty, staff and students who attended the rally last Thursday to protest the president's action, we continue to look for any intellectual justification for this assault on campus speech.

Letter to the editor: Student voices still heard

To the Editor: When The Mirror asked me to comment on the cancellation of the Same-Sex Marriage Forum, I looked at it at from the angle of a student leader. From a student leader's perspective, I understand and sympathize with the limitations and frustrations that one planning an event can run into.

Letter to the editor: student voice concern over Sodexho

To the Editor: I am writing, in complete disgust, a response to the recent Mirror article "Sodexho Fires, Rehires Two After Urinating In Storeroom." I am appalled something like this would happen in the first place, but to rehire those who committed the repulsive act is awful.

Letter to the editor: Student voices support for Sodexho

To the Editor: As a Fairfield University student and part-time Sodexho employee, I was disgusted to read Ms. Sheehan's article about the Sodexho employees who were fired and reinstated after allegedly urinating in a storage room. I was extremely disturbed that the staff of The Mirror apparently did not feel the need to check their facts before writing such an incendiary story.
