Raul Midon, a blind man, came to talk about his experiences Friday at the Quick Center. But, rather than discussing his experiences, he communicated through song.
The New York City singer/songwriter is a pop music genius. He is able to make a one-man-playing guitar show sound like a whole jazz band. He can make his guitar sound like a keyboard, and also uses it as a drum that sets the cool beat under his bluesy voice.
The Quick Center was not even half-filled but that just added to the creation of a café-like ambiance.’
One of the first songs the singer played was ‘It’s All in Your Mind,’ from his first album ‘State of Mind.” He told the audience that the song is about a boy moving to New York City, and, with a sense of humor, proceeded to explain that ‘it’s completely totally non-biographical.”
On this song, among others, Midon exhibited his excellent innovation in style and his talented finger work on the guitar.
Midon’s style ranges from jazz, blues, R’amp;B and even folk.’ The first song Midon played was a new song entitled ‘Why do I feel so bad?’ The song had a definite Bob Dylan and Pete Seger feel.
When watching Midon, it’s easy to forget that he is blind because of his enormous talent ‘- it seems impossible that someone who has been blind since birth could play guitar like he does. Midon played his ‘The More that I Know,’ a song about being blind, towards the end of the show.’ ‘
Midon ended the show by playing one of his more romantic tunes, ‘Waited All My Life,’ which was written about his wife.’ The song is very catchy love song, and, before playing it, Midon explained that he was excited to hear a couple in New York City had just used it as their wedding song.
Although the show was not well-attended, it was certainly entertaining to those who were sitting in the audience, as they called for an encore after Raul was led off the stage.
